Grant Title: DNA Extraction for Global Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) in Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease

Location: MRC Prion Unit and National Prion Clinic, University College London (UCL) Institute of Prion Diseases

Grant Year: 2026

Prion diseases such as Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) are rare and rapidly progressive. This project will support a major global genetic study by funding and coordinating the safe extraction of high-quality DNA from existing blood and brain samples held in centres around the world, so that as many sites as possible can contribute on an equal footing. The goal is to assemble around 10,000 samples for analysis, with a partner organisation providing large-scale DNA sequencing and returning the resulting data to participating scientists. , We know that making progress depends on researchers pooling samples internationally and joining forces together. By increasing both the number and diversity of samples, the study aims to identify genetic factors that influence who develops CJD and how it progresses, generating biological clues that could ultimately inform better diagnostics and, in time, more targeted treatments.

About the Researcher:

Professor Simon Mead is a consultant neurologist and clinician–scientist based in London, where he is Clinical Lead of the NHS National Prion Clinic and Deputy Director of the MRC Prion Unit at University College London. He leads national clinical services for people affected by prion diseases and directs a translational research programme focused on improving diagnosis, symptom management, understanding disease mechanisms, and accelerating therapeutic development, including biomarker discovery and other tools for clinical trials. He has worked in long-standing partnership with patients, families, and charities to improve support, information, and access to specialist care, and collaborates widely across the UK and internationally to strengthen understanding of sporadic, inherited and acquired prion diseases.
